Recurring and Subscription Processing

Recurring revenue is attractive to build and unforgiving to underwrite. Renewal transparency, cancellation handling and dunning strategy have as much influence on an application as the volume itself.

At a glance

  • Renewal transparencyNotification, pricing and cancellation clarity reviewed against network guidance.
  • Retry strategyDunning schedules and soft-decline handling discussed to limit involuntary churn.
  • Migration careExisting subscriber tokens and billing dates handled deliberately during any move.

Why recurring billing draws extra scrutiny

When a customer disputes a recurring charge, the issuer usually asks the same three questions: was the customer told this would recur, was cancellation straightforward, and can the merchant evidence both. Card networks have tightened expectations around trials, negative-option offers and renewal notices in particular.

An application that answers those questions in advance is materially easier to underwrite.

What good recurring practice looks like

  • Price, billing frequency and renewal date disclosed before the first charge
  • Trial-to-paid transitions stated in plain language at the point of purchase
  • Renewal reminders sent ahead of higher-value or annual charges
  • Cancellation available through the same channel the customer signed up in
  • A descriptor that stays consistent across every renewal
  • Records that link each charge to a documented customer consent

Involuntary churn and retry logic

A large share of failed subscription payments are recoverable. Soft declines from insufficient funds, expired cards or issuer velocity limits often succeed on a later attempt. Retrying too aggressively, however, creates its own problems — including issuer-level blocking.

We review your current retry schedule, account-updater coverage and pre-dunning messaging, and discuss what your gateway supports.

Migrating an existing subscriber base

Moving recurring billing between providers is a project, not a switch. Vaulted card data may be portable between compliant environments, or it may not be. Billing anniversaries, proration and in-flight dunning all need a plan.

We map the migration with you and your developer before anything is changed in production.
